What are the chances of a motorcycle being stolen?

A motorcycle in Greece has an average 5% chance of being stolen.

More specifically in numbers:

GREEK POLICE & ELSTAT DATA

  • In 2019, Greek Police recorded 7,124 motorcycle thefts nationwide.

More recent official data show that 18,063 vehicles were stolen in Greece in 2024, compared with 21,570 in 2019 — a decrease of approximately 16%.

Meanwhile, the number of motorcycles in circulation has continued to rise, reaching 1.85 million in 2024 and 1.92 million in 2025.

Based on the latest available vehicle-theft trends, the estimated annual risk for a motorcycle is approximately 0.3–0.4% per year.
  • THEFT RISK OVER THE LIFE OF A MOTORCYCLE
Over a typical ownership/lifetime period of around 14–15 years, this corresponds to an estimated cumulative theft risk of approximately 4–6%.

The actual risk can be considerably higher in densely populated urban areas, depending on location, motorcycle model, parking conditions and the security measures used.

    Motorcycle GPS Tracker Selection Guide:

    What to watch out for:

    Good hiding

The size of the GPS tracker is crucial for its anti-theft effectiveness!

TIP: The size of the GPS tracker is usually determined by the capacity of its built-in battery. This means that the larger the battery, the bulkier the GPS tracker.

There are techniques to conceal the device and its wiring so that it blends in with the other components of the vehicle.

    Low consumption

It is well-known that GPS trackers drain the vehicle's battery, especially in motorcycles.

However, not all GPS trackers are the same!! There are GPS trackers on the market that consume up to 120mA! But there are also devices whose consumption is as low as 1mA in Power Off Sleep Mode (like the Teltonika FMB965).
This means that power consumption is almost negligible.

    Not a standalone device

Under no circumstances is a standalone device recommended!
    • It can't hide as well as a wired one.
    • Either it will be bulky, or it won't have much autonomy.
    • It doesn't have the same reliability and completeness of notifications as wired systems.
    • There is a chance it might not work when needed.

But if it is the only option, we suggest solutions such as Teltonika TAT140
